The Premium Earbuds Deathmatch
Tale of the Tape
The Breakdown
Sound Quality
The Sennheiser MOMENTUM TW4 is the audiophile's choice — detailed, natural sound with exceptional imaging and separation. As of March 2026, no true wireless earbud has surpassed its audio quality. Sony's WF-1000XM6 is balanced and refined with a powerful 10-band EQ. Bose sounds good but prioritizes bass impact over audiophile neutrality.
ANC
Bose remains the king of silence. The QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds 2nd Gen block more ambient noise than any competitor — airplane engines, office chatter, train rumble — nothing gets through. Sony's V3 processor comes close and adapts intelligently. Sennheiser's ANC is competent but clearly a tier below both leaders.
Battery Life
Sennheiser dominates with 7.5 hours per charge and 30 hours total with the case — the best stamina in the premium tier. Sony manages 8 hours per earbud but only 24 total. Bose trails with 6 hours per earbud. For frequent travelers who cannot charge constantly, Sennheiser's endurance advantage is meaningful.
Codec Support
Sennheiser supports everything — SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX Adaptive, aptX Lossless, and LC3 via LE Audio with Auracast broadcast support. It is the most future-proof earbud available. Sony offers LDAC for hi-res streaming. Bose has aptX Adaptive but no LDAC. If codec versatility matters, Sennheiser wins by a mile.
Comfort
Bose has the most comfortable fit — the stability bands conform to ear shapes naturally and create a secure, pressure-free seal. Sony's foam tips are excellent but the buds are slightly bulkier. Sennheiser's fins and tips work well but the earbuds are the largest of the three.
Value
The Sennheiser MOMENTUM TW4, now frequently found on sale for $199 (down from $300 MSRP), is an absurd bargain. You get the best sound quality, best battery life, and most codec support for less than both competitors. Sony at $330 is the priciest. Bose at $299 is fair for the ANC leadership.
The Verdict
Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4
The Sennheiser MOMENTUM TW4 sounds better, lasts longer, and now costs less than both competitors.
The Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 wins because sound quality should be the primary reason you buy premium earbuds — and nothing in this price range sounds as good. The 7mm TrueResponse transducers deliver detail, warmth, and spatial imaging that make Sony and Bose sound compressed by comparison. This is especially true for lossless music over aptX Lossless or aptX Adaptive. Add the best battery life (30 hours total), the widest codec support (including aptX Lossless, LE Audio, and Auracast), IP54 water and dust resistance, and a street price that has crashed to $199 — and the value proposition is devastating. Bose still owns ANC supremacy. But if you are buying earbuds to listen to music — which should be the point — the Sennheiser is the clear winner.
